Amazon is starting to use the ePub e-book format. Starting in late 2022, changes to the Send to Kindle feature will provide users with the ability to send ePub files to their devices.
The Kindle line has long been a staple in the e-book market. Even though the Amazon product has been a huge success, there has always been one major flaw. We are talking about the lack of support for ePub in the Kindle. Admittedly, for the most widespread e-book in terms of market share, it was strange not to support the most common e-book file type.

This news doesn’t mean Kindle will suddenly offer built-in ePub support per se. ePub files are actually converted to another format before being sent to the device. Kindle devices will still not be able to directly read ePub files. For more than a decade, Amazon has been trying to get users to stick with MOBI, its proprietary standard. Often this meant that direct access to a lot of content was almost impossible for the average Kindle user.
From online newspaper subscriptions to more niche books not found on Amazon, there is a lot of content that is simply not available in MOBI format. Therefore, Kindle users had to manually convert e-book files using third-party software.
Perhaps this will be the first step towards the complete abandonment of the obsolete MOBI format.
