Amazon governors seek “consensus” on letter to Lula, says Mauro Mendes

The governor of Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes, declared, this Monday (14th), in an interview with CNN that the governors of the Amazon are seeking a “consensus” on a letter that will be delivered to president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), at COP27, proposing an alliance with the federal government for the preservation of the forest.

“Certainly, this letter will be released together with its delivery to the president. We are, at this moment, dialoguing, the governors of the Amazon, who are here, in addition to some who could not come, we will have to talk to them, pass on this information and create a consensus of what we are going to talk about to the next president of the our country,” explained Mendes.

According to the Chief Executive of Mato Grosso, several important topics are being discussed at COP27, such as global warming and food security.

“And in these two important points, Brazil and Mato Grosso, we are major players. Because, Brazil is today the largest net exporter of food to the planet. It is a country that does this by having great environmental assets. My state, for example, we are the biggest Brazilian producer and we preserve 62% of our territory”, he said.

The letter, in his words, should bring principles, concepts, but, above all, have a position that “Brazil needs to be more respected”.

The differences between these positions became clear this Monday (14th) during a meeting with those present, in addition to Mauro Mendes, of the governors of Acre, Gladson Cameli; from Pará, Helder Barbalho; from Tocantins, Wanderlei Barbosa; and from Rondônia, Marcos Rocha.

Barbalho, who is temporarily leading the group at COP27 due to the absence of Waldez Góes, governor of Amapá and president of the consortium, was the most emphatic in defending an alliance with Lula’s environmental policies.

According to him, the fundamental point of the meeting with the president-elect will be to make it clear that “the states will be allies of the federal government in the sustainable and social development agenda and that they must adopt an agenda that must be committed to reducing emissions, with economic solutions for the Amazon and Brazil”.

One of the first names to invite Lula to participate in COP27, the governor of Pará said that the presence of the president-elect puts the country in a leading role.
