The James Bond, Rocky and RoboCop movies are now owned by Amazon. The e-commerce giant has completed its $8.45 billion acquisition of legendary film and television studio MGM.
This week, European Union competition authorities unconditionally approved the deal. They determined that there was not much overlap between the two companies and that “MGM content cannot be considered mandatory” compared to other studios.
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) could challenge the acquisition until mid-March. Because that didn’t happen, Amazon was able to complete the deal.
Amazon said in a press release that MGM “will complement the work of Prime Video and Amazon Studios to provide customers with a variety of entertainment experiences.” The studio has over 4,000 films and 17,000 episodes of television series, 180 Oscars and 100 Emmys. MGM films include such classics as Thelma and Louise, The Silence of the Lambs, The Wizard of Oz, The Magnificent Seven and Raging Bull.
Amazon will still be releasing James Bond movies in theaters instead of keeping them as Prime Video exclusives, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Bond uses a Kindle on his next adventure. The source believes it likely that the vast majority of MGM’s films and TV shows will reach Prime Video after being shown in theaters and after agreements with other streaming platforms have expired.
