Between July and December 2023, the Specialized Police Station for Crimes against the Environment and Urbanism (Dema), of the Civil Police of Amazonas (PC-AM), referred 134 incidents of environmental crimes to the courts.
The balance was presented by delegate Juliana Viga, head of Dema. According to her, constant operations were carried out with the aim of combating irregularities that harm the environment and affect the public health of the population.
Throughout the second half of 2023, 16 operations were carried out.
“Among them are operations Curupira, Anhanguá, Rio Preto, Passarinhar, and Noturna Jaci, which aimed to investigate noise pollution crimes, and occurred until the tenth phase”, said the delegate.
Dema reported that Law No. 9,605/1998, in its article 54, describes the crime of pollution, which consists of the act of causing pollution, in any way, that puts human health or animal safety at risk or destroys flora. One example is burning garbage.
“The perpetrator may be held liable for the crime of intentional or negligent pollution, in accordance with the Environmental Crimes Law. If the crime occurs negligently, that is, without intention, the expected penalty is imprisonment of up to 1 year and a fine”, informed the delegate.
Complaints against environmental crimes can be made by calling (92) 3634-7042, Dema's hotline, or 181, from the State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP-AM).
