Almost 1 million people served in Brazil in 2024

A survey of the Penitentiary Information System (Sisdepen) for the second half of 2024 indicates that 905,316 people were in some form of criminal sanction in Brazil until December 31, 2024 .

The data, compiled in the 17th Sisdepen Cycle with reference period from July to December 2024, reveal a detailed overview of the penal population in the country.

According to the survey, most of this population, 670,265 people is serving time in physical cells in the various prison establishments of Brazil. These data reflect closed people, or alternative regimes that require the presence of the convict in physical cell.

Among 670.265 inmates in physical cells, 641,128 identified themselves in the male population, against 29,137 female . São Paulo records the largest male population with 196,839, and Roraima the smallest, with 3,098. The state of São Paulo also leads among the female audience with 9,145 inmates, being Amapá with 109, the smallest.

The report has a significant number of individuals who were on a house arrest being 122.102 with electronic monitoring and 112,949 without electronic monitoring .

Previous surveys

Compared to previous Sisdepen surveys, it is possible to observe a growth trend in the population under criminal sanctions. In January to June 2023 the prison population in physical cells was 665,392 with 92,894 in house arrest with electronic monitoring and 97,186 in house arrest without electronic monitoring totaling 855,472 people .

Already in the period of January to June 2024 the population in Physical cells hit 687,764 with 105,104 in house arrest with electronic monitoring and 115,117 in house arrest without electronic monitoring adding 907,985 people .

When comparing the total of 855,472 people under criminal sanctions in the first half of 2023 with the total of 905.316 In the second half of 2024, there is an increase that points to a growth trend in the Brazilian criminal population. The numbers represent a growth of 5.8% in 24 months.
