Lukashenko arrived yesterday Wednesday (5/4) in Moscow for talks with the president of Russia Vladimir Putin.
During the first day of talks between the two leaders, the progress made on the Russia-Belarus unification project dominated the agenda. According to Lukashenko, 28 programs related to this plan have been largely completed. “Our frequent meetings are intended to ensure that there will be no delays in the implementation of these programs”explained.
Today Thursday (4/6), Putin and Lukashenko plan to discuss the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus and Finland’s accession to NATO.
Nuclear weapons location ‘mystery’
What is known so far about the deployment of Russian tactical weapons in Belarus is that they will be deployed in the “western part” of the country.
Officials on both sides have avoided giving details – for obvious reasons – of the sites where nuclear weapons will be developed, but they confirm that a storage facility will be completed by July 1, as ordered by Mr Putin.
Belarus is bordered to the north by Lithuania and Latvia and to the west by Poland – these are three member states of NATO’s eastern wing, which were strengthened by the deployment of additional troops and equipment after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The US and other allies of Kiev have expressed their opposition to the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil. American President Joe Biden described this prospect as “disturbing”.
Minsk made it clear that it would allow Moscow to even deploy intercontinental ballistic missiles on Belarusian territory if deemed necessary.
