Alarm sounded at Britainas a superbug was identified in pork meat, which according to experts is potentially fatal.
As stated by Guardian tests found that more than 10% of sampled pork products, including steaks and ground beef, were contaminated with bacteria that showed resistance to an antibiotic used to treat serious illnesses in humans.
This particular superbug is a variant of enterococcus bacteria which can cause urinary tract and wound infections, among other ailments.
In the most serious cases bacteria can infect the bloodstream, heart and brain.
This particular microbe becomes resistant to treatment with certain types of antibiotics, which means that some of the drugs that a doctor might normally prescribe would have no effect on treating the disease.
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate, which is responsible for the use of antibiotics on farms, said in a statement: “We are committed to reducing the unnecessary use of antibiotics in animals and it remains our intention to strengthen legislation in this area.”
It is noted that contaminated products involved pork sold under the “Red Tractor assured” label and products with the RSPCA food quality assurance label, as well as organic products.
