“Além da Lenda”: animation wants to show national folklore for the current generation

Now the bag make hangloose, the boto wears printed shirts and the villain of the time is the halloween . It was seeking to carry out a project on national myths that was less serious and somber, that the “Beyond Legend” appeared, first as a TV series, in 2018, then adapted for the big screen.

“I usually say that my generation was born in a limbo of our folklore, with great projects, but they were treated only as educational content”, says Ulisses Brandão, executive producer of the animation. “We wanted something funnier, that broke the rules a little, that wasn’t formal at all.”

With a current language, the series “Além da Lenda” focuses each episode on a character from Brazilian folklore. Some more famous like the Shepherding Negrinho and the Headless mule others less like Chibamba and Cabriola goat .

A more fun take on the series with our folklore, however, doesn’t mean ditching the “horror” aspect altogether; there are some scares for the viewer and, above all, a lot of action and dynamism.

“We wanted to translate this mythology for a new generation”, says Ulisses. “This generation that was born in the Marvel World, DC, and that doesn’t have access to national content in the same way.”

But in bringing 13-episode animation to the big screen, the challenge was another.

The cast of characters remains the same, only for one charismatic addition: Saci. He is the central point of the film’s story since, on his birthday, October 31, a sacred book that brings together all the legends of Brazilian folklore ends up lost.

After a confusion involving the characters of our mythology and a trio-symbol of Halloween, the book ends up in the hands of Lucas, a fan of superheroes, comics and games, now responsible for protecting the folklore of Brazil.

“Holding a child’s attention for seven minutes is easier than an hour and twenty”, says Marcos França, director of the film “Even more difficult is holding the attention of the adult who is accompanying the child”.

For the 40 people involved in “Beyond Legend”, it was important to apply the concept of the “family” to the feature, with jokes and debates that showed a more adult layer of the production. A Boto xavecando Cuca and a guarana soda on Saci’s birthday table are on the list.

A surprise for the older generation who know the national legends in a rather cold way, without much sense of humor.

And an even bigger surprise for those born in the Northeast of Brazil, “Além da Lenda” is the first animation from Pernambuco to be released in theaters. A reason to be proud, but which, according to the creators of the series, comes with a great responsibility.

“It is an honor for us. Pernambuco is well known for adult live-action cinema, but now we open the door to animation, too”, says Marcos França.

According to them, there was no room for error. Although the film was finished a month before the pandemic Covid-19 arriving in Brazil in February 2020, the budget was closely watched.

“We’re talking about a Brazilian, independent film, and, on top of that, animation, the mistake costs a lot in these cases”, says Ulisses Brandão.

With a sequel already planned, the creators of the series made “Além da Lenda” a multiplatform project, with a film, podcast and a game in the finalization phase.

“The idea is to capture the young audience in all possible ways and bring our Pernambuco acumen of storytelling to the whole of Brazil”, he concludes.
