Alcione and Elza Soares: see references from Gina Garcia’s debut album

The singer Gina Garcia listed, in an interview with CNN what were the references used by her to construct “I’m Ready” , her debut album. The mother of Gloria Groove is launching into solo career after working for more than 25 years as a night singer and backing vocal names like Raça Negra.

Although the album does not yet have a confirmed release date, two songs from the album have already been released: “My angel” It is “Respect is good” . The first is a collaboration with Gloria Groove and was born from a story from the drag queen’s childhood; the second is a message of support for the LGBT+ community and features the participation of federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP), Preta Gil and Liniker.

A CNN Gina said that she was inspired, above all, by the work of Alcione and Elza Soares, two women who were very successful in the genre she chose to work on in her debut album: samba.

“I was able to get to know Elza up close and she was an encyclopedia not only of knowledge, but also of history and representation. Her story is something that really moves us. Alcyone can’t even talk, right? In samba, we are embarrassed to say this, to hurt other people. But, for me, Alcione, in samba she is queen”, explained the singer.

She even worked as a backing vocalist, alongside Gloria Groove, on a 2015 tour that Elza Soares did alongside Mitch Winehouse, Amy Winehouse’s father.

In addition to the two mentioned, Gina Garcia revealed that she intends to rescue the work of other women who made history in samba, such as Clara Nunes, Jovelina Pérola Negra and state deputy Leci Brandão (PCdoB-SP). In the interview, the singer also mentioned names such as Roberto Ribeiro, Emília Santiago and Originais do Samba.

“My references for what I am doing in my work come from Alcione backwards”, he defines.

She also said that she re-recorded, for her debut album, alongside Gloria Groove, a song by Elis Regina. Gina lists the singer as one of her references, alongside Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, Djavan, Simone, Zizi Possi, Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia.

“[Elis] It’s a reference for us, it’s top on the market. There’s no one who doesn’t like it. She doesn’t have a defect. If there is, it’s imperceptible, we don’t know,” she said.
