With the turnout of the voters amounting to 48% and being increased by two percentage points compared to the previous elections (2017) they closed at 7 p.m. (local time) the polls for election of a new parliament in Albania.
The voting in the 5200 polling stations went smoothly with some minor problems, which, however, did not harm the process, a fact that was welcomed by all parties.
The successful voting process is, according to the European Union’s ambassador to Albania Luigi Soreka, the beginning of the end of the elections in the country. Counting remains, however, a process traditionally challenged in Albanian elections.
According to a statement from Central Election Commission Chairman Ilirian Tselimbasi, which took place as soon as the polls closed, it is not known when the counting of votes will begin. He promised, however, that the result for the parties and the pre-election alliances would be announced within 48 hours of the start of the count.
With some exit polls, which are not considered credible, giving a slight lead to the opposition, Eddy Rama, the Democratic Party and others leading the ruling Socialist Party, the leader of the Socialist Movement, Monica Krielomadi, spoke to “Sweeping victory of the opposition”.
