Alanis Morissette celebrates her 50th birthday this Saturday (1st). The Canadian singer broke through with the album “Jagged Little Pill”, which sold more than 33 million copies and became, at the time, the best debut by a female artist in the world.
To mark the album's 25th anniversary, completed in 2020, Alanis toured the world with “Celebrating 25 Years of Jagged Little Pill” between 2021 and 2023. The tour passed through Brazil in November last year and became the most profitable of her career of the singer.
The Canadian is the owner of seven Grammy Awards and four of them went to “Jagged Little Pill” at the 1996 ceremony: Best Album, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song (“You Oughta Know”) and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance (“You Oughta Know”). She also won awards for Best Long Music Video (“Jagged Little Pill: Live”), Best Rock Song (“Uninvited”) and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance (“Uninvited”).

“You Oughta Know”
Released as the first single from “Jagged Little Pill”, the song was Alanis's worldwide calling card, who had already released two albums that were relevant only within Canada. The song reached sixth position on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped Alternative Airplay, a chart that measured song plays on modern and alternative rock radio stations.
The recording features guitar by Dave Navarro and bass by Flea, who at the time were part of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The former is also known for his work in the band Jane's Addiction.
“Ironic”
The fourth single from “Jagged Little Pill”, “Ironic” has over 450 million plays and is Alanis’ most listened to song on Spotify. It is the main hit of the Canadian's career, which reached her highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 with it: fourth place.
The song received two nominations at the Grammy Awards, but it really shone at the VMAs, where it received six nominations and won three trophies: “Best Edition”, “Best Female Video” and “Best New Artist in a Video”.
“Uninvited”
Released in February 1998, “Uninvited” was part of the soundtrack for “City of Angels”, a film starring Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. The song could not enter the Billboard Hot 100 because the rules at the time did not allow songs that had not been released as physical singles to be eligible for the North American magazine's main chart.
“Uninvited” won two Grammys and was Alanis’ first release after the worldwide success of “Jagged Little Pill” and was only included in some promotional versions of the album “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie”.
“Thank U”
The song that opened the work and was the first single from “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie” was “Thank U”. Written and produced by Alanis, the song reflects the spiritual discoveries the Canadian made on a trip to India.
“Thank U” peaks at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2000.
“Hands Clean”
The first single from the album “Under Rug Swept”, released in 2002, broke a four-year hiatus without studio albums. During this period, the singer had released an acoustic album in partnership with MTV and then decided to take some time off.
“Hands Clean” tells of a relationship Alanis had with a much older musical mentor when she was just 14 years old. To portray the vulnerable position in which she placed herself in the lyrics, the singer chose to make a music video in which she walks without clothes through the streets and stores of New York.
