Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa said tonight that the organization he leads, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham – formerly known as the Nusra Front – will be disbanded, as part of a national dialogue conference. Asked, during an interview he gave to Al Arabiya, about the dissolution of his organization, Saraa replied “Of course. A country cannot be governed with the mentality of organizations and militias.” The group previously had ties to Islamic State and al-Qaeda, but says it has severed them and is trying to present itself as a moderate. He has repeatedly pledged to protect minorities, who fear he will try to impose Islamist rule. According to Saraa, the upcoming national dialogue conference will include the broad participation of Syrian society and issues such as the dissolution of the parliament and the drafting of a new Constitution will be discussed and voted on.
