Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa said tonight that the organization he leads, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham – formerly known as the Nusra Front – will be disbanded, as part of a national dialogue conference. Asked, during an interview he gave to Al Arabiya, about the dissolution of his organization, Saraa replied “Of course. A country cannot be governed with the mentality of organizations and militias.” The group previously had ties to Islamic State and al-Qaeda, but says it has severed them and is trying to present itself as a moderate. He has repeatedly pledged to protect minorities, who fear he will try to impose Islamist rule.
