The Advocacy General of the Union (AGU) published this Tuesday afternoon an opinion that concluded that the preparation of an Environmental Assessment of the Sedimentary Area (AAAS) does not prevent IBAMA from granting an environmental license to explore oil and natural gas at the mouth of the Amazon river.
The opinion was drawn up based on a request from the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira. He had requested a legal position on the imbroglio involving the drilling of a well on the high seas on the so-called equatorial margin, close to Amapá.
The clash is today the biggest in the environmental area within the government. On one side are Silveira, the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, and Centrão. On the other hand, the Minister of the Environment, Matina Silva, and environmentalists, opposed to the project.
Ibama had rejected the license to drill the well, having as one of the justifications the need for an AAAS. The AGU, in its opinion, made that this is not necessary for the license.
CNN contacted Petrobras, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of the Environment and Ibama and is awaiting a response.
