Agro grows in relation to GDP in the 2nd quarter despite challenges with rains and crops

Even facing problems with rain and crops, agribusiness also recorded important results in the second half of the year, released this Thursday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Agriculture, which had retreated 0.9% in the last quarter, recorded a high of 0.5% in the second quarter of this year. According to the coordinator of National Accounts at IBGE, Rebeca Palis, this sector is closely linked to seasonality.

In the semester, agriculture has been falling, pulled by the retraction in soybean production, which is the largest crop in Brazil. Considering the Added Value of activities in the quarter, agriculture recorded R$ 167.7 billion.

Rebeca explains that, in the quarter, the slight increase is related to the lower weight of the soybean crop in the period compared to the previous quarter and to the weight gain of the coffee crop, whose production is expected to increase 8.6% compared to that harvested in the year past.

Even with some crops not showing good results in this period, such as rice, which had a retraction of 8.5%, compared to the same period in 2021, corn and coffee stood out in this sector, showing that they grew in relation to the same period in 2021. last year – up 27% and 8.6%, respectively.

According to the latest Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), also released by the IBGE, the forecast is that the Brazilian crop of cereals, legumes and oilseeds should reach a record 263.4 million tons. This value is 4.0% higher (or 10.2 million tons) than the harvest obtained in 2021 (253.2 million tons) and 0.8% higher (2.0 million tons) than the June estimate.

Estimates of livestock in the GDP show a positive contribution of this activity to the performance of agriculture in the second quarter, with emphasis on cattle, which overcome the weak performance of milk production.

According to data from the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (ABIEC), revenue from Brazilian beef exports grew by 45.5% in the first seven months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

From January to July of this year, sales revenue reached US$ 7.409 billion, compared to US$ 5.092 billion obtained in the same period of the previous year. In volume, the increase was 17.7%, from 1.064 million tons in 2021 to 1.253 million tons until July this year.

In the same period, the average price of protein grew 23.7%, from US$ 4,800 per ton to US$ 5,900 per ton. “These data are the result of the intense work we have been doing to open new markets and expand our presence in the countries where we already operate, always highlighting the role of Brazil as a trading partner of nations and not as a competitor”, explains Antônio Jorge Camardelli, president of ABIEC.
