THE Bulgaria and Romania reached an agreement with Austria on their entry into the European free movement area Schengen at sea and air level from March 2024, as announced by the Romanian government.
“After 13 years, Romania will finally join Schengen! We have a political agreement on the matter!”Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Tsolaku wrote on Facebook.
The Ministry of the Interior of Romania mentions in a statement that a “political agreement” has been reached between the three countries to extend the zone “on the air and sea borders” of Romania and Bulgaria from March 2024.
The issue of opening land borders will be the subject of talks to be held next year. THE Austria, which vetoed the two countries' entry into the Schengen zone a year ago, floated the idea it called “Air Schengen” in early December. Vienna has said it is ready to relax rules governing air traffic to Bulgaria and Romania if Brussels strengthens the European Union's external borders.
