After truck hits bus with elderly people, at least 15 people die in Canada

At least 15 people died in the Canadian province of Manitoba on Thursday (15), after a truck hit a small bus carrying a group of elderly people, local police said.

The collision is one of the deadliest road accidents in recent Canadian history. The Winnipeg Free Press newspaper said the victims were on their way to a local casino.

The accident occurred at the intersection of two main roads near the town of Carberry in southwest Manitoba, 170 km west of Winnipeg.

“We were able to confirm that at least 15 people were killed as a result of this collision,” said Assistant Commissioner Rob Hill, who heads the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Hill said in a televised press conference that “sadly, this is a day in Manitoba and across Canada that will be remembered as both a tragedy and an enormous sadness.” The bus was carrying about 25 people, mostly elderly people, she explained.

Police said the drivers of both vehicles were alive, but declined to say who may have been responsible for the accident.

In a tweet, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lamented what he called the “incredibly tragic” news.

“I am sending my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones today and I keep the injured in my thoughts. I can’t imagine the pain those affected are feeling,” Trudeau said.
