A potential battle between Apple and Twitter appears to have been averted after a meeting between Elon Musk and Tim Cook. Musk, the new owner of Twitter, said in a series of tweets on Wednesday that he had met with Apple’s chief executive.
“Good talk,” Musk wrote. “Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about the possible removal of Twitter from the App Store. Tim made it clear that Apple never considered doing this.”
On Monday (28), Musk accused Apple of restricting freedom of expression and claimed that the tech giant threatened to kick the Twitter app off the iPhone.
A meeting between Musk and Cook was an unexpected outcome, with the two appearing to be on a collision course following Musk’s attack on Monday. Still, both Twitter and Apple have plenty of reasons to keep the peace.
Apple is one of Twitter’s biggest advertisers and controls access to its iPhone and its billion-plus users.
Meanwhile, Musk’s push against Apple threatens to put the iPhone maker even more in the crosshairs of Republican lawmakers nervous about the power Silicon Valley wields. Musk framed his fight with Apple as a fight against Big Tech crushing free speech.
