Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the country will retaliate strongly against Hamas after the deaths of six hostages whose bodies were recovered over the weekend.
Netanyahu hinted that the response would be similar to the attack on Hezbollah in July that killed the Iran-backed group’s top commander, Fu’ad Shukr.
“We will exact a high price from Hamas; I will not say what the price will be and what we will do, there will be an element of surprise here,” the prime minister said in a press conference on Monday (2).
Strike against Israeli government
The death of the six hostages caused enormous commotion and popular mobilization in Israel. There was a national strike, which even affected the country’s main international airport.
The country’s largest trade union, known as the Histadrut, has threatened to shut down the “entire” economy. The organization’s president, Arnon Bar-David, warned on Sunday that Israel was “in a downward spiral, and we are constantly receiving body bags.”
In addition, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets.
The aim of the protests is to pressure the government to secure a deal that would guarantee the return of more than 100 hostages, including 35 believed dead, held in Gaza.
