K-pop group LE SSERAFIM is back with their fourth mini-album, “CRAZY,” released this Friday (30). CNN was present, online, at the press conference held on Thursday (29), where members Chaewon, Sakura, Yunjin, Kazuha and Eunchae shared details about the new work.
C’mon Vogue
The choreography of the single “CRAZY”, which is in the old school hip hop genre, features the Vogue dance style, which emerged in the 1960s and imitates poses of fashion magazine models.
Yunjin said that it was the first time that the artists danced vogue in their choreography and confessed that it was challenging.
“It’s very modern and chic at the same time, and at first it was hard to be expressive with a genre like that,” she reveals. “But luckily, one of our lead dancers already had a lot of vogueing experience. That makes all the difference.”
Sakura also said that it required a lot of strength. “You know, we have a lot of muscles, we pride ourselves on being in shape. But it was still very difficult,” she emphasized.
“CRAZY” music video
For the video for the title track, Kazuha said that she had the participation of very famous dancers from the United States.
“They flew all the way to South Korea, and we’re so grateful for that. It was great working with them,” she said. “There’s one scene in particular where we worked as a group, all together, and I felt this explosive energy that you can see on screen.”
Chaewon also told a coincidence that happened: in the storyboard for the music video, there was a scene with lightning, but on the day they were filming the weather was really beautiful.
“Until, out of nowhere, lightning struck,” he said. “And as you know, lightning is something that permeates the overall concept of this mini-album. I felt like it was almost a sign that this album will receive a lot of love from the fans.”
Coachella Reviews
In April of this year, LE SSERAFIM made their debut at the Coachella festival, but ended up receiving a lot of criticism regarding their vocal stability live. Regarding this situation, leader Chaewon said that these reactions were fuel for the group’s growth.
“We learned a lot from this performance. Since our debut, we’ve been on many stages, but that was our first time at such a big festival and on such a huge stage,” he explained. “I think we were a little more excited than we should have been, and we had to calm down a little. I think that was what was missing in our performance.”
The group leader also said that these are experiences that they need to live and learn from, and that she is sure that they can always grow as artists.
“Our task now is to show a better version of ourselves, and we will do our best to do that,” he says. “I think this comeback is our first step on that journey. We have worked very hard.”
Yunjin as main producer
One new addition is Yunjin’s debut as the main producer of one of the tracks, “Crazier.” She is a songwriter, with credits on the group’s songs such as “Perfect Night” and “Smart,” and has also composed and produced solo songs such as “I ≠ Doll” and “Love You Twice.”
For “Crazier,” the artist said producers asked her to show her crazier side.
“‘Crazier’ is not just about how I feel, but also about how my bandmates feel. We had a lot of conversations to weave our thoughts, as well as the thoughts of our generation, into this song,” he explains. “And I think that’s why this track is even more special to me and to them.”
Yunjin also directed the group members when recording the song, and Sakura praised her:
“Because she knows us so well, she gave us very clear and detailed feedback, so we understood everything quickly. She gave us a lot of good advice, and we had a lot of fun together with Yunjin.”
