After conflicts in southern Bahia, government announces sending the National Force

The National Public Security Force was called to work in the far south of Bahia, which has been the scene of constant episodes for agrarian conflicts between indigenous people, rural producers and entrepreneurs in the region.

The announcement was released on Thursday (17) by the government of Bahia, to ensure “peace and public order”. The measure had been suggested by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and validated by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and Mupoiba (United Movement of Bahia’s Indigenous Peoples and Organizations).

The statement was released two days before the date on which indigenous peoples are celebrated and 11 days after death João Celestino Lima Filho, 50. He was shot during a land conflict on a farm in the city of Prado on April 6. Prior to that, in March, the indigenous Pataxó Vitor Braz was shot dead during an attack on the community that lives in an area that is in the process of demarcation.

After these violent attacks, the Bahia Civil Police also performed the Pacifying Operation and more than 10 people were arrested, as well as seized weapons.

The National Public Security Force is composed of military police, firefighters, civil police and experts, and is triggered in emergency situations. Also according to the Bahian government, the team will act specifically in areas of interest and services of the Union, on cooperation with local authorities. The addresses were not specified.
