Afghanistan: Islamic State claims responsibility for Pakistan embassy attack

Responsibility for the attack on the Pakistani embassy in Kabul was claimed by the Islamic stateconfirming that the target was the head of the diplomatic mission.

According to APE-MPE, in the relevant announcement it is stated that “attacked the ambassador of Pakistan”whom he characterized “traitor”confirming the version given by Pakistani Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif, who reported “attempted murder” the head of the diplomatic mission.

A suspect was arrested after the shooting that seriously injured an embassy guard.

Although Pakistan does not officially recognize the Taliban regime, it has kept its embassy in its capital open. Afghanistanfollowing the return of fundamentalist Islamists to power in August 2021.

The Pakistan maintains a complicated relationship with the Taliban. He has been accused of secretly supporting them since their emergence in the early 1990s, as well as after the US military invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, even though he officially maintained his support in Washington.

The Taliban retook power in Kabul on August 15, 2021, amid the chaotic withdrawal of US and other foreign troops after two decades of war.
