Insufficient immunization among people over 50 years of age makes the circulation of coronavirus even more dangerous among the Chinese.
After a strict zero Covid policy, the government of the Asian country eased the circulation restriction and stopped reporting the number of daily infections since last Saturday (24).
The population of China is not sufficiently immunized with booster doses, in addition to having a single type of vaccine, which does not include messenger RNA technology – like Pfizer’s.
According to Raquel Muarrek, an infectologist at Rede D’Or, less than half of Chinese people over 50 years old received the third dose, while the fourth application was not even released in the country.
The vaccines available to health authorities in China are only inactivated viruses, which can sustain effect for less time than RNA vaccines.
“They have these two difficulties to study, and they can even seek the release of other vaccines to help in a greater response of immunity support” said Raquel Muarrek to CNN Radio.
An increase in the circulation of the coronavirus and the reopening of China to visits by foreigners still raises concerns about the spread of new variants.
The infectologist warns of the risks to Brazilians, who have not yet properly adhered to booster doses and childhood vaccination.
“We need to improve the vaccination of the first and second boosters a little more. The population forgets to get vaccinated and only when they start to see an increase in cases do they worry about taking another dose ”, she points out.
The expert pointed out that the increase in cases around the world is usually reflected in Brazil after about one or two months. “The average [de infecções] it does not fall because the population is not fully vaccinated to reduce transmission”, emphasizes Raquel.
According to the latest balance sheet by the Ministry of Health, on Monday (26), the moving average in Brazil is 35,047 daily cases.

Raquel highlighted the importance of releasing second-generation vaccines, adapted to Omicron and offering greater protection.
The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved in November the emergency use of two bivalent Pfizer vaccines against Covid-19. The two updated immunizers that include sublines of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus and should be used as booster doses against the disease.
On Sunday (25), the Ministry of Health received another 2.8 million doses of the bivalent vaccine BA.4/BA.5. With the order, the country already has more than 9.6 million Pfizer immunizers that protect against the original strain of the coronavirus and against these two Ômicron subvariants.
