Dressed in a tailored Balmain gown and without a jewel in sight, Lima’s main red carpet accessory was her pregnant belly. The pleated black dress hugged her body, the draped skirt perfectly framing the model’s midriff.
Lima, who is pregnant with her third child, announced in 2018 that she was retiring from Victoria’s Secret after joining the brand as an angel in 1999.
Lima’s Cannes outfit closely follows a series of high-fashion looks from Rihanna starting when she and the rapper A$AP Rocky announced they were expecting their first child through a paparazzi-style photo shoot in New York in February.
In the widely circulated photos, Rihanna’s unmistakable midriff was exposed by an unbuttoned vintage Chanel puffer dripping $5,000 jewelry from Christian Lacroix.
In May, in the third quarter, the musician and businesswoman made headlines again by appearing on the cover of Vogue. In a follow-up interview, Rihanna spoke about the restrictive nature of traditional motherhood fashion.
“My body is doing amazing things right now, and I’m not going to be ashamed of it,” she said. “Because why should you be hiding my pregnancy?”
While Rihanna has become synonymous with edgy maternity wear, other celebrities have offered similarly edgy looks in the past.
In 2017, Beyoncé revealed that she was pregnant with twins in an Awol Erizku photo shoot. The image, which shows the singer draped in a mesh veil and kneeling in front of an arch of flowers, was briefly the most-liked Instagram photo of all time.
And in 1991, it was actress Demi Moore who made pop culture history by posing nude while seven months pregnant for the cover of Vanity Fair.
Moore recently reflected on the impact of her pioneering cover: “Every time I see someone posing like this, I get so excited,” she told “Entertainment Tonight.” “Because I really think it’s one of the most beautiful moments of our lives.”
