ADMIE: Submitted a proposal to participate in 25% of the EuroAsia Interconnector

ADMIE submitted an official proposal to participate in the increase of the share capital to be carried out by the implementing body of the electricity interconnection of Crete-Cyprus-Israel EuroAsia Interconnector, the President and CEO of the Operator Manos Manousakis said in an interview with newshub.gr, on the occasion of his visit to the construction site of the Conversion Station being built in Damasta, Heraklion, in the context of the large electricity interconnection of Crete-Attica.

Mr. Manousakis pointed out that “the proposal of ADMIE to become a shareholder of the EuroAsia Interconnector company was already in the making” and emphasized that “based on this proposal, ADMIE will acquire 25% of the share capital, and will have the control of the implementation of the project”. The new, strategically important international interconnection of Crete-Cyprus-Israel will also start from Damasta.

The head of ADMIE also notes, among other things, that:

– Our country can become the entry point for alternative and green energy sources from the Middle East and North Africa for the whole of Europe, reducing dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

– ADMIE’s subsidiary for the provision of telecommunications services Grid Telecom has included in its immediate planning the construction of a cable anchoring station in Crete that will act as a reception point for international submarine systems that are being developed in the Eastern Mediterranean, connecting Greece with multiple destinations to Europe, Africa and Asia. An agreement has already been signed with Telecom Egypt, for the interconnection of Greece and Egypt through the branching of an undersea fiber optic cable that is currently being laid in the Mediterranean, with a point of closure in Crete.

– The alternating current interconnection between Chania and the Peloponnese covers about 1/3 of the load that Crete needs during the winter months. We are optimistic that within 2024 we will be able to electrify the interconnection between Attica and Crete. With the completion of the project, the entire load of Crete – and even more – will now be covered by these two connections. Crete will become energy secure as it will receive energy from the mainland. But since significant development of renewable energy sources is expected on the island, it is likely that we will see Crete exporting green energy and providing energy support to mainland Greece, helping to green the country’s energy mix.
