Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, died at the age of 72 on Friday.
The information was confirmed by Coltrane’s manager.
Throughout his career, he has also played forensic psychologist Dr. Edward ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in the drama series “Cracker”, and was in the James Bond films “GoldenEye” and “The World Is NOT Enough”, in the role of Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky.
Before Coltrane gained international fame playing the bearded Hagrid, he honed his comic skills in theater.
In the 1980s, he appeared in a short-lived sketch series called “Alfresco” alongside greats like Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson.
On Friday (14), Fry paid tribute to his friend in a post on Twitter.
I first met Robbie Coltrane almost exactly 40 years ago. I was awe/terror/love struck all at the same time. Such depth, power & talent: funny enough to cause helpless hiccups & honking as we made our first TV show, “Alfresco”. Farewell, old fellow. You’ll be so dreadfully missed

Coltrane reunited with Thompson in the drama series “Tutti Frutti,” for which he won his first British Academy Television Television Academy Best Actor nomination.
His first successful role was for the television series “Cracker” in the 1990s. The work, a crime drama, ran for three seasons from 1993 to 1995, with two subsequent specials.
The role of Hagrid, a half-giant, half-human character, came naturally to Coltrane. He knew and loved the books because he read them to his children, he recalled in an interview.
