Acre River reaches 17.75 meters, the second highest mark in history

The updated bulletins from the government of Acre and the city of Rio Branco released this Monday morning (4) inform that the Acre River surpassed the second historical maximum and reached 17 meters and 75 centimeters with the rains.

The new measurement indicates that the floods of 2024 are already greater than those of 2023, when, on the same March 4th, the river reached 17 meters and 72 centimeters. The spring began to be monitored in 1971, more than 50 years ago.

The news came just an hour before the arrival of ministers Waldez Góes, of Regional Integration and Development, and Marina Silva, of the Environment. They will visit the communities most affected by the rains, with a special focus on the indigenous population, as shown in CNN .

The expectation of the State Civil Defense, as determined by the CNN is that the river will rise again in the coming days, possibly surpassing the mark of 18 meters and 40 centimeters, reached on March 4, 2015. This is also the warning from the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters, the Cemaden.

The agency points out that there is 'the possibility of overflow, due to the passage of the flood wave of the Acre River, which is at elevation and above the overflow level in Rio Branco'. The so-called 'overflow quota' is, in practice, the maximum limit of the river before it overflows: 14 meters. This limit was already exceeded on February 25th. From then on, the river only rose.

Climatempo's estimate reported at the request of CNN points to another 25 millimeters of rain for this Monday (4/3). This is the same amount of water that made the river rise another 30 centimeters between last Friday and last Saturday.

The state already has more than 100,000 people affected, of which almost 25,000 are homeless or homeless.
