Acre distributes first shipments of medicines from the Ministry of Health to municipalities affected by river floods

The government of Acre began, this Friday (1st), the distribution of inputs and medicines from the Ministry of Health (MS) to municipalities affected by floods in the state's rivers. More than 15 cities are in a disaster situation due to flooding.

The first shipment made available by the Federal Government will be sent to the municipalities of Assis Brasil, Brasileia, Jordão, Plácido de Castro and Santa Rosa do Purus.

Governor Gladson Cameli and the head of the Health Department (Sesacre), Pedro Pascoal, were at the agency's warehouse, in Rio Branco, to dispatch the first kits. Cameli informed that after this distribution, the rubble will be removed and the houses that were damaged will be restored.

According to the state administration, the waters have begun to recede considerably in some municipalities and the government is already preparing for the cleaning and sanitizing phase of affected homes and streets.

The Secretary of Health, Pedro Pascoal, highlighted the importance of medicines and supplies when the waters descend. When people return to their homes, this is the period when they are susceptible to diseases.

“Diseases come when the water level drops. On this occasion, as a state, we need to provide the minimum level of service to the population. Jordão was one of the hardest hit municipalities, where we had to set up a field hospital,” he explained.

The head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Assistance and Inputs (Dafi) at Sesacre, Suelen Dantas, stated that the choice of recipients was made by the Ministry of Health, in compliance with established guidelines.

“We received five calamity kits, each with 32 different medicines and 16 supplies [4500 itens em cada kit], such as syringes, gauze, masks and gloves. One kit has the capacity to serve up to 1,500 people, and more shipments are already expected next week,” he said.

The governor also highlighted the need for medium and long-term planning to remove families from the city of Brasileia to neighborhoods that do not flood. The municipality has most of its area in the lower part. “The solution, we have no other alternative, is to plan the city for the upper part, otherwise this situation will continue to happen in the coming years”, he concluded.
