About 50 hippos are dead poisoned by anthrax in Congo

At least 50 hippos and other large animals were killed poisoned by Anthraz in the Viruga National Park, in eastern Congo. The bodies were seen floating on the Ishasha River in one of Africa’s great lakes, the park chief said and a local authority on Tuesday (8).

Images shared by the park show the immovable hippos aside and back in the water, or trapped between the foliage on the muddy banks of the river.

The deaths represent a great loss to the park, which houses about 1,200 hippos and has struggled to keep populations threatened for decades by illegal hunting.

The park guards noted that there was a problem when the animals began to appear about five days ago along the river.

The water course forms the border of Congo with Uganda and crosses an area under the control of rebel combatants.

The tests confirmed the poisoning by Anthraz, reported the director of Parque Virunga, Emmanuel de Merode.

He said buffaloes were also killed without providing a number.

The cause of poisoning is not yet clear.
