“Abandoned House” has regular electricity, water and sanitation, says delegate

The “Abandoned House” – popularized by the podcast by journalist Chico Felitti, from Folha de S. Paulo – has electricity, water supply and basic sanitation in good standing, delegate Marcelo Palhares told the newspaper. CNN, this Thursday (21).

On the afternoon of this Wednesday (20), police officers executed a warrant at the big house in Higienópolis, in the capital of São Paulo, and entered the property.

In a statement, the City of São Paulo stated that “an inspection was carried out to verify the safety, health and stability of the house”. According to the delegate, the intention was to verify if the resident of the house, Margarida Bonetti, was in a state of abandonment.

The podcast “A Mulher da Casa Abandonada” narrates a process that investigated Margarida and her husband, Renê Bonetti, for keeping a maid in conditions analogous to slavery in the United States. Renê was tried and served time in the country. Margarida returned to Brazil before the trial and has lived in that house for over two decades.

“She is not in a state of abandonment, she is assisted by her family. The abandonment, in this case, would be if she didn’t have the resources to maintain herself, but no. She does not show major signs of dementia or any disorder”, informed delegate Palhares.

After an examination by doctors, the police suggested that Margarida go to a relative’s house, but she refused.

The delegate also denied the rumors that the house would not have basic services. “The house has electricity, water supply and basic sanitation, and the bills are paid regularly,” he said.

Despite the police verifying that Margarida is not in a state of abandonment, confirmation should only take place at the end of the investigation, in 30 days, and the preparation of the reports.

“The experts identified the house’s insalubrity, but the full report will still be evaluated and made. Another engineer also went to the site to identify the current structure”, added the delegate.

During the police operation this Wednesday (20), activist Luisa Mell, who was at the scene, rescued a puppy from the house. “She could do that, since she didn’t enter the house, she just stayed in the garden,” Palhares said.

“Everything indicates that the animals lived in less than reasonable situations, due to the extremely unhealthy environment. If this is found, she [Margarida] will be held accountable. A very weakened puppy was found”, concluded the delegate.
