A World War II monument is being destroyed by over-tourism

A World War II-era monument is showing irreparable damage due to over-tourism and is expected to be completely destroyed if the number of tourists does not decrease. This is the Haiku Stairs, also known as Stairway to Heaven, located in Hawaii and built by the US Navy along the ridge in the Koʻolau Mountains on the island of Oahu, and includes 4,000 steps. Business Insider reports that the staircase was open to pedestrians and closed for good in 1987 because of problems with its stability. However, tourists continued to cross it illegally and now thanks to social media they are posting videos with instructions to get to the monument illegally. So, in August 2021 the Honolulu City Council voted to remove the steps, but there was a backlash from the local community.
