This Tuesday (7), marks one month since the Islamic group Hamas advanced into Israeli territory, killing 1,400 people in Israel and kidnapping more than 240. Since then, the Israeli Army has launched an air and ground offensive in Gaza Strip, promising to eliminate the radical group.
The estimate is that at least 10,300 people have died on both sides, according to health authorities on both sides. The region definitely turned upside down and changed the daily lives of Israelis and Palestinians who, even after a month of attack, are still shaken by the conflict.
Brazilian Larissa Lima, 23, lives with an Israeli boyfriend in Tel Aviv. The young woman reports that some routines were modified because Israeli citizens had to leave their homes and jobs to serve in the Army, as was the case with her boyfriend. “The feeling is that it seems like it won’t end, there seems to be no end, just when we think everything is calming down, it starts all over again”, reports Larissa.
Among the list of those killed in the attack on October 7th, three Brazilians: Ranani Nidejelski Glazer, 24, from Porto Alegre, and Bruna Valeanu, also 24, and Karla Stelzer, 42, from Rio.
On the list of those kidnapped by the group, 18-year-old Tchelet Fishbein-Zaarur, daughter of a Brazilian mother and known as Celeste, was found dead near the border with Gaza. She had been missing since October 7th.
In the week that marks one month since the attacks, Mario Ricardo, Celeste’s uncle, tells CNN that the feeling remains the feeling of mourning. He is Brazilian and has lived in Israel for over 50 years. “We miss it a lot. We still can’t capture that she’s gone. It seems like she just left somewhere and that she will still come back,” he reports.
In an interview, Fishbein also stated support for civilians affected on both sides by the conflict and said he feels hopeful for the end of the conflict. “I hope it ends quickly. With each passing day, there is more suffering for both sides. Both for the innocent here in Israel and for the people in Gaza. On both sides there are innocent people who are suffering.”
On the other side, the situation is no different. This Monday (6), the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health stated that more than 10,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Israel launched its military offensive a month ago.
According to ministry spokesman Ashraf Al Qudra, 10,022 Palestinians in the enclave were killed by Israeli attacks, including 4,104 children, 2,641 women and 611 elderly people.
It is unclear how many fighters are included in the total. A CNN could not independently verify the figures released by the ministry in Gaza, which is isolated by Israel and mostly closed by Egypt. According to calculations by CNN Based on the latest figures released by the Gaza Ministry of Health, at least one child is killed in Gaza every ten minutes as a result of the conflict.
Naturalized Brazilian in 2019, Hasan Rabee is with his wife at his sister’s house in Khan Yunis. In the city, which is in the south of Gaza, there are ten other Brazilians staying at family homes.
Waiting for authorization to leave the Gaza Strip, Palestinian with Brazilian citizenship Hasan Rabee reports on the drama in the south of the Gaza Strip. Anxiety and distress increase as access to food and water decreases. “We are very hopeful and we will see if we can get out in the next few days”, says Rabee.
