The member countries of the Organization of Turkic States have adopted a “common Turkish alphabet” that meets the needs of capturing their common linguistic origin. The relevant decision was taken at the 3rd meeting of the “Commission for the World Common Alphabet of the Turkic Countries” held on September 9-11 in the capital of Baku, Azerbaijan in collaboration with the “Turkish Academy”, based in Astana, Kazakhstan, and the “Turkish Foundation Language” of Turkey. In a statement of the “Turkish Academy” it is pointed out that “the main purpose of the meeting was to complete the work on the project of the common alphabet for the Turkish languages, using the knowledge gained in this field and the experience of the two years of activity of the Commission”. The “common Turkish alphabet” is based on the Latin equivalent with the addition of some variations to meet the phonetic needs of all the dialects of the wider Turkic language family.
