The family of a 14-year-old boy who he committed suicide he claimed that his death was caused by a homophobic post on social media.
Salvador Rios died on August 15 at the home of a family member after a social media post targeting him with homophobic comments.
According to the website pinknews.com The gay teenager’s death, which is being investigated by police, occurred before the start of the school year. The teenager would be starting eighth grade at Standley Middle School in San Diego, California.
Speaking to ABC10, as reported by the Mirror, his sister, Aleah, said that an anonymous post shared on social media on the day of her brother’s death.
“One post not only ruined my brother’s life, but my life, my family’s life. I feel like a piece of my heart is missing”.
Before the Instagram post, which has since been deleted, her brother was excited about the start of the new school term, she added.
“Someone posted a photo of him making extreme homophobic comments, revealing personal information he had only revealed to a few people”Aleah said of the publication, which was also believed to have included Salvador’s family and friends.
Salvador first experienced homophobia after coming out as gay in sixth grade, aged just 12his sister said. He was attacked by several students on his way home from Marston Middle School. His family later found out he was experiencing bullying since the beginning of the school year.
This led him to transfer to a new school.

A GoFundMe set up by Salvador’s family has nearly reached its $10,000 goal to help cover his funeral expenses.
The fundraiser says Salvador, also known as Chavito, “was a son, brother, nephew and friend to many and we will remember him as the happiest and funniest in our family and the one with the most extravagant clothing. His cousins knew him as the life of the party. He was such a kind soul and loved by our family».
A study led by University College London (UCL) researchers published in the international journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology found that lesbians, gays and bisexuals are more than twice as likely as straight people to experience suicidal thoughts or self-harm.
The findings echo similar studies from the US, which documented an increased risk of suicidal thoughts within the LGBTQ+ community.
