7.3 magnitude earthquake in Xinjiang, near China’s border with Tajikistan

Very powerful seismic 7.3-magnitude tremor was recorded near the border of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, near the border of the northwest China with the Tajikistanat 08:37 (local time – 02:37 Greek time), broadcast by the Chinese state television network CCTV.

For its part, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) spoke of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake, however, a little later it revised its estimate of its power down to 6.8.

Xinjiang, a mountainous and rugged Chinese province, is generally sparsely populated, with only 10% of its vast area considered suitable for habitation.

It is noted that the earthquake data from the Geodynamic Institute of Athens or from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute are solutions derived from the automatic computer system, without the participation of a seismologist. They are constantly updated with the arrival of new data.
