A survey conducted by the Department of Tocogynecology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) of Unicamp pointed out that 65.7% of women interviewed in the state of Sao Paulo have already had an unplanned pregnancy .
The study, part of the doctoral research of the sociologist Gallardo-Alvarado, involved 534 pregnant women aged 18 to 49 years.
The data revealed that unchecked pregnancy occurs more frequently between black and brown women (74%), with less education (77%), single (85%) and Amasiadas (72%).
According to Gallardo-Alvarado, the research sought to understand the sociodemographic barriers that make it difficult for women’s reproductive planning and pointed out factors such as ethnicity, education, own income, marital situation and number of children as determinants.
For Professor Luis Bahamondes, the research advisor, the results obtained by the researcher are worrying, as the percentage of participants who claimed to have had an unplanned pregnancy overcame historical data at more than ten percentage points.
To date, the number exceeds the historical average recorded in previous studies, ranging from 52% to 55%, says the gynecologist. “In the richest state in Brazil, 65% of women claim that they had an unpaid pregnancy is very serious.”
The research also reinforces the need to expand public health policies and access to long -term contraceptive methods, such as hormonal IUD and implant, as well as actions aimed at education and reducing social and gender inequalities.
“Contraceptive methods save lives, and Brazil does not invest in a policy of supplying long -term contraceptives, especially the intrauterine device [DIU] With hormone and hormonal implant, so that all women can plan their long-term future, ”concluded GallardoDoral.
