A few days ago, Netflix released the official trailer for the film Pinocchio in director Guillermo del Toro’s version and although many fans has us excited, there are those who think that the animations in stop-motion they are a bit scary. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we have remained, in the subconscious, with the reference to Disney or DreamWorks, that is, the classic Pinocchio and the Shrek.
The truth is that if there is something terrifying in the story, in any of its versions, it is not the animations themselves, but some parts of the plot that really throw us off balance and that perhaps until now we realized how unpleasant they have always been, because when we were children maybe we didn’t take it so seriously. So that you know what we are talking about, here are the things that we consider to be scary.
1. It could have stayed in the body of a toy
The Blue Fairy had the power to turn Pinocchio into a real boy or leave him as a simple toy, not to mention that he could be “trapped” between being a wooden doll and a person. Let’s be honest, that phrase “A child who is bad can be left behind” does not sound so nice and less to blackmail a child or does it?
2. Stromboli
The puppets catch our attention, what’s more, we like them, but this character blew himself up when he kidnapped Pinocchio so that he wouldn’t run away and could continue earning money, exploiting the little wooden doll. Also, he locks him in a cage, threatening to tear him to pieces. Isn’t he one of the scariest villains around?
3. The whales
These mammals didn’t seem harmful until we saw what a whale did to cuddly Geppetto. We consider that it was a monster and what about you?
4. The island of games
The paradise of all children was a place where they could do anything, even smoke and drink… ok, that’s kind of strange, but what seems to be the ideal place for any child turns into a nightmare, since when the night falls night, the children pay for all the pranks they did during the day, turning into donkeys.
5. The Coachman
You leave the island, the one in charge of it! When remembering this character, it gives us a somewhat uncomfortable feeling, because this man tortured the little ones and once they were completely donkeys and could not speak, he sold them! Child exploitation is definitely terrifying.
