A 4-month-old baby was among the dead who were taken to the only functioning hospital that remained in Rafah for the past 24 hours. This Wednesday (8), Kuwait Specialized Hospital said that 35 bodies were brought to the facility last day, including nine children.
Most of the dead were between 20 and 30 years old, he added.
Another 129 injured people were also taken to hospital in the last 24 hours. The hospital's media officer, Saber Muhammad, warned on Wednesday that the hospital was “very small with limited capabilities” and therefore could not handle a large number of victims.
Kuwait Specialized Hospital became the only functioning hospital in the southernmost city of Gaza after Al-Najjar Hospital stopped functioning when Israeli forces declared eastern Rafah a red zone.
There are field hospitals that remain in Rafah; however, these too are having trouble staying functional. Doctors Without Borders said on Wednesday (8) that it is releasing patients from Rafah Indonesian Field Hospital to prepare for a possible departure.
The European Hospital in Gaza, east of Khan Younis, is also receiving victims from Rafah, with a body of a person killed by artillery shelling arriving there overnight on Wednesday morning.
