A survey carried out in August this year by the Brazil-Europe Integration Forum (FIBE) showed that 37% of Portuguese people associate tourism and natural beauty when they think of Brazil — with mentions of beaches, heat and holidays.
In second place, Brazilian culture and festivities are mentioned. 15% of respondents refer to symbols of Brazil, such as samba, football and carnival.
Then, the third set of associations brings up Brazil’s social problems, such as violence and crime (7%).
When asked how the citizens of Portugal see Brazil, 53% of respondents answered that it is a tourist destination, 32% said that it is a sister country, and 3% see Brazil as a trading partner.
The survey heard 800 people over 18 from each country.
About half of respondents from both countries are aware of the Bicentennial of Independence — 48% of Brazilians and 49% of Portuguese.
On the other hand, when it comes to the representation that Brazilians have of Portugal, the first concerns the historical and economic relationship between the countries (21%).
Almost tying with the first group of references, Portugal emerges as a country of opportunities and quality of life (19%) for Brazilians. A third group of mentions highlights the European country as a tourist destination (16%), with mentions of specific beauties and cities, such as Lisbon and Porto.
Portuguese cuisine was in 4th place, with 11%; followed by culture with 6%.
Another 10% said they see Portugal as a sister country and 8% as a trading partner.
