20% of Brazilians still believe that homosexuality is a disease, says survey

A survey by the Instituto Locomotiva para a IO Diversidade pointed out that 2 out of 10 Brazilians still believe that homosexuality is a disease.

The survey took place between May and June of this year, online, with 1574 participants from all over Brazil.

A CNN Radio the executive director of IO Diversidade Rachel Rua also highlighted that, among the group that believes that sexual orientation is a disease, 4 out of 10 respondents think that it can be “cured.”

“Human sexual behavior is broader than heterosexuality, which is the hegemonic model and most accepted by society”, he pondered.

According to her, everything that runs away from the idea of ​​“natural”, society classifies as deviance: “That is not true, homosexuality is a behavior as natural as heterosexuality, it is not a choice.”

The study also points out that 45% of respondents do not know what a transgender person is.

“Prejudice is also expressed by lack of knowledge, which can be just ignorance about the topic or resistance to knowing the other”, said Rachel.

7 out of 10 survey respondents also said they believe it is more difficult for LGBTQIA+ people to enter the job market.

And 90% of respondents said that LGBTQIA+ people suffer violence and prejudice in Brazil.

“40% say they would not accept a child who changes gender, who recognizes himself as trans or non-binary, it is a taboo, information and public policies are needed to reverse this situation”, he added.
