THE France is preparing for a new wave of angry protests after the death of the 17-year-old by police fire, in the Nanterre suburb of Paris. The police officer who shot him is charged with manslaughter, while Paris experienced another night of rage and violence. There were also incidents in other French cities.
As it states euronewspolice initially claimed that the young man tried to hit two police officers with his car, but that was not the case. In a video released and confirmed by AFP, a police officer is seen shooting 17-year-old Nael M.
“In order for the shooting to be legal, the life of the police officer would have to be in danger. This was not the case, since it is clear in the video that the police officers are on the side and not in front of the car,” said Yasin Bouzrou, lawyer for the victim’s family.
THE French President, Emmanuel Macron, said he was “shocked” and described the event as “unacceptable” and “unforgivable”, while the French government called for “calm”. The government spokesman, Olivier Veran, relayed Macron’s statements and made an “appeal for calm”. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the mobilization of “2,000 police officers to ensure that public order is maintained in the area of responsibility of the Paris police department and especially in the Hauts-de-Seine area.”
Authorities are worried that the wave of reactions could spread beyond the capital. Incidents and vandalism have already been reported in the cities of Mulhouse, Dijon and Bordeaux, among others. 24 police officers have been injured, while dozens of arrests have been made.
According to international media correspondents, many citizens, especially local residents, are shocked and outraged. As they complain, this is a “cold-blooded murder”, while they note that similar incidents have increased in the last two years. Also a Reuters investigation of fatal shootings in 2021 and 2022 shows that the majority of victims were black or of Arab descent.
“More than 13 people have been killed in various police checks and many say that this is another example of the extreme and murderous tactics of the French police,” notes the correspondent of Al Jazeera. “As a mother from Nanterre, I have a feeling of insecurity for our children,” said Mornia Lambsi, a local resident and anti-racism activist.
