16 GB RAM is already not enough for games: testing

The authors of the YouTube channel Testing Games decided to find out how much RAM a good gaming PC needs for today’s demanding games. To do this, they tested Dying Light 2, CYBERPUNK 2077, Hitman 3, Forza Horizon 5, God of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Minecraft in computer modifications with 16, 32 and 64 GB of RAM – in all cases, the RAM was dual-channel (that is, not one bar, for example, for 16 GB, and two for 8 GB). As it turned out, sometimes 16 GB of RAM is not enough for games. It is reported by IXBT.

For the test, enthusiasts used a powerful assembly.

  • System: Windows 10 Pro.
  • Processor: Intel Core i9-12900K.
  • Motherboard: MSI MPG Z690 Force.
  • CPU cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4.
  • Video card: GeForce RTX 3090 24GB.
  • RAM: 16 GB (2× 8 GB), 32 GB (2× 16 GB) or 64 GB (2× 32 GB), in all cases DDR5 and 5200 MHz.
  • SSD: 2× SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 1TB.
  • Power supply: CORSAIR RM850i 850W.

Gamers tested the games in two modes: running them either only or running them together with background applications.

It turned out that quite often 16 GB of RAM is no longer enough. Dying Light 2 and Minecraft lack that amount of RAM in both test modes, and for Forza Horizon 5 two 8 GB sticks are only enough when running the game alone without other applications in the background.

According to the results of the video, now 32 GB of RAM is the best option, it makes little sense to install more.
