15 years of Prohibition: Deaths in traffic accidents caused by alcohol use fall 32%

15 years ago, Lei Seca, a set of norms to inhibit the consumption of alcoholic beverages by car drivers in Brazil, was sanctioned.
Since then, the rate of deaths in traffic accidents due to alcohol use has fallen by 32%, while the rate of hospitalizations, due to mixing alcohol and driving, has increased by 34%.

The information is from the dossier “Panorama of traffic accidents due to alcohol use in Brazil”, prepared by the NGO Center for Information on Health and Alcohol (Cisa).

In 2021 alone, according to the survey, Brazil recorded 8.7 hospitalizations and 1.2 deaths per hour due to traffic accidents caused by alcohol use. The data represent almost 76,000 hospitalizations and almost 11,000 deaths in the year.

The biggest victims are men, who represent 85% of hospitalizations and 89% of deaths. Regarding the age group, the population between 18 and 34 years of age is the most affected.

Brazil is one of the few in the world to establish zero tolerance for vehicle driving. Even so, according to the survey, about 5.4% of Brazilians reported driving after drinking.
