10-year-old boy dies after trying to save his younger brother from floods in MG

Victor Mikael Santos da Silva, aged 10, died this Monday (9), after trying to save his younger brother, aged 5, from being swept away by a flood caused by rain in Sacramento, Minas Gerais, according to the Hospital of Clinics at the University of Triângulo Mineiro (HC-UFTM).

The case happened last Sunday morning (8).

The younger brother, Davi Luccas Santos da Silva, remains hospitalized. His health status was not disclosed by the health unit.

The case

The Fire Department was called at around 8 am on Sunday, on Avenida Doutor Tomás Novelino. Officers were informed that two children were swept away by rainwater and taken into a culvert on the side of the road.

Initially, only David was swept away by the flood. Victor went after him to try to rescue his brother, but ended up being taken away.

Firefighters reported that the two were dragged about 300 meters to the storm drain. They then went more than 300 meters into the pipe until they ended up in a stream in the region.

Both were found unconscious, and were taken to the hospital still alive, in order to receive first aid. Victor, however, did not resist.

According to the military, the culvert on the avenue did not have a protective grate. “Even an adult could have been dragged into the pipeline,” the statement said.
