10 Scary Stories That Inspired Disney Movies

The Disney classics are many years old, but older are the true stories on which these films were based. Let us remember that the original authors of the stories that made Mickey’s world very successful were written by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and Charles Perrault.

However, these writers had a very different idea from the adaptation that came to our screens thanks to Walt Disney and that has made us believe in fairy tales, marking the childhood of thousands and thousands of people. On this occasion, and without intending to ruin any cherished memory of his favorite film, we want to tell you how terrifying the original stories really were and that it is worth mentioning that, obviously, they were not intended for boys or girls.

1. The little Mermaid

Scene from Disney's The Little Mermaid movie, Ariel and Eric holding hands on a wooden boat

We all know the story backwards and forwards, although in its original version, written by Hans Christian Andersen, Ariel accepts the exchange with Úrsula of receiving a pair of legs in exchange for her tongue! That’s right, the sea witch cuts off her tongue to keep her voice. But that’s not all, because when he is on the ground, he suffers from horrible pains when trying to walk. The worst part is that her sacrifice was made for nothing because Prince Eric ends up marrying another girl, while he sees her as if she were a mute pet. wow!

two. Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

If giving a kiss to an unconscious woman sparked a stir in the new generations, when we tell them what Perrault wrote in the original version, it will become a scandal and with good reason. When the princess falls asleep under Maleficent’s spell, Prince Philip, instead of waking her up with a sweet “kiss of true love”, impregnates her! She wakes up nine months later with a set of twins. In addition, Felipe had already married and leaves his family to marry the princess. And what was the moral?

3. Pinocchio

It is not necessary to argue if the version of Guillermo del Toro or the one of Disney is better, on the contrary, it is necessary to know that in spite of all the somewhat disturbing things that Pinocchio has in its plot, in the original version by Carlo Collodi it is even worse, because when he turns into a donkey, he ends up hanged and Jiminy Cricket also dies. His moral of it? The apparent teaching that if you misbehave, things don’t end well. What extremes!

Four. Tangled

Rapunzel

We must tell you that in the original version there was magic and also a plant that caused problems, but not for the reasons that Disney told us. The Brothers Grimm narrated that the king entered the gardens of the wicked witch to satisfy the craving of his pregnant wife and, in return, had to give Rapunzel to the witch.

Some time later, when the princess grows up and the prince shows up at the tower, they meet and make love, for which she becomes pregnant. Hearing about her, the witch abandons her in a desert for her to give birth. However, she also makes fun of the prince when he goes to look for his beloved and she is not there. Also, she makes him jump from the tower and this causes him to fall on the thorns and go blind. She finally finds Rapunzel and her tears cure her blindness.

5. Cinderella

Cinderella

Most of us know how terrifying the original story was, but if you don’t already, here are some details that Disney left out and changed. The stepsisters, being so self-centered, became terribly desperate for the slipper to fit and decided to cut off their toes and heels. In addition to this, the Grimm brothers also wrote that at Cinderella’s wedding, the villains were punished by a flock of birds that pecked out their eyes.

6. Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel

Many versions, all disturbing, but none like the Grimm brothers. In his story, the two abandoned little brothers return home following the trail of ashes, but upon arrival, the stepmother kills Hansel and orders Gretel to cook him for dinner. But that’s not all, since his father eats it without knowing that he was his son. However, the girl saves her brother’s heart and puts it in a tree to later add the other remains. Then the child turns into a bird and the stepmother, trying to kill him again, dies. Ok, she all of a sudden she lost my appetite. Yuck!

7. Snow White

Snow White

We are going to rely solely on the ending because the plot has too many assassination attempts and cannibalism to retake it. However, at the end of this original Brothers Grimm tale, the witch attends Snow White and the prince’s wedding, so as a form of punishment, he orders red-hot iron shoes to be put on her and Let the witch dance to death. Prince, calm down, old man!

8. Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood

Perrault didn’t want to add a heroic character to his version, so he omitted the woodcutter altogether, and when the Big Bad Wolf said, “They’re for eating you better,” he wasn’t kidding and ate the little girl.

9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Ok, Disney told us that the evil Frollo died while Quasimodo, Esmeralda and Phoebus survive as heroes. But in the Victor Hugo plot, on which the animated film was based, the ending is not the same. Esmeralda is accused of murdering Phoebus and sentenced to death. Also, unable to protect her from her, Quasimodo pushes Frollo off the tower in revenge. Over the years, the skeletons of a woman and a hunchback are found embracing in Esmeralda’s tomb.

10. Peter Pan

Peter Pan

Some dark interpretations of this story refer to the constant kidnapping of the Darling family by Peter Pan. However, in a fragment of the work Peter Pan and Wendy, by JM Barrie, the author claims that if you grow up too fast, Peter will “make you disappear”. Hence it comes that the number of “lost children” changes constantly.
